People do not realize the problems they cause when they feed scraps and bread to Geese.

Well intended people feeding geese bread and scraps can promote a host of problems. This kind of feeding provides a nutritionally deficient diet that is detrimental to their well-being. It can lead to aggressive behavior toward people as well as encourage the geese to gather and stay in those areas. These overcrowded areas lead to increased spread of diseases like avian cholera, avian botulism, and “duck plague,” among geese and other birds. Artificially fed geese often develop wing deformities, which hamper their ability to fly.

Even though some communities pass ordinances prohibiting the feeding of geese and penalize those who violate these laws, people will tend to ignore these laws until they understand the negative effects on geese and people. Placing signs on site that explain why geese should not be fed is one of the best ways to educate people.

Educational signs should explain the following:

  • Human food is not good for the geese because it lacks proper nutritional value.
  • Feeding attracts more geese than the area can naturally support.
  • Geese in large numbers are more likely to get diseases and parasites.
  • Geese cause problems by eating plants needed for ground cover and erosion control.
  • Too many geese in one area of the city may be forced to have them killed.
  • Goose management costs taxpayers money.

Education and regulations can help reduce food handouts to geese.
