Apply Now For Your Gull Egg Removal Permit

Feb 4, 2025

With temperatures hovering around freezing in the Midwest, spring may seem far away, but warmer temperatures – and new generations of nuisance birds – will be here before you know it. Gull nesting season generally stretches from April to July. During nesting season, if gulls nest and settle on your property, they can be particularly territorial and aggressive, attacking perceived threats to their nest, while littering your rooftop or property with biohazard waste.

By having a plan in place to manage nests, your property can effectively mitigate the main problems associated with gulls: damage to your property/ assets and human health and safety risks. Wild Goose Chase can lead the design and execution of your property’s gull management plan, with the first step being obtaining the correct gull egg removal permits from the appropriate State and Federal regulators.

How to Get a Gull Egg Removal Permit

The permitting process for gull egg removal varies by State and can require approval at both State and Federal levels. From start to finish, the entire permitting process can span over two months and requires extensive documentation of your property’s gull problem, communication with various regulatory agencies, and coordination amongst various regulatory agencies. Late applications may not get approved before eggs hatch, which can happen as early as May. Once eggs hatch, it is illegal to remove the gulls, which means the colony – sometimes hundreds strong – will be residents on your property until August.

To obtain a federal permit for gull egg removal, the property must submit a highly detailed application with the United States Fish & Wildlife Service, and also receive approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Once the federal permits are received, in Illinois the property must then obtain a State permit through the Department of Natural Resources.
