Bird Management for the Energy Industry

Energy Plant

Energy sector properties and assets provide shelter from extreme weather conditions and can be conducive nesting sites for nuisance birds. Nuisance birds – such as Canada geese, gulls, pigeons, sparrows, and starlings – are some of the species that affect the energy industry.

Common bird problem areas include but are not limited to:

  • Downstream manufacturing and refining petrochemicals
  • Midstream process and storage facilities
  • Distribution assets (e.g., substations)
  • Generation assets (e.g. solar)

The Damage Birds Cause

Property & Asset Damage

Large, open spaces and elevated surfaces are attractive to birds. Accumulated bird droppings and nesting materials can damage facilities and equipment, and increase associated cleaning and maintenance costs.

Revenue Loss

The continual presence of nuisance birds and the accumulation of their droppings and nesting materials can negatively impact productivity and result in machine and equipment downtime.

Human Health & Safety Risks

Bird droppings and nesting materials have been documented to harbor dangerous bacteria and diseases, including e. Coli.

The accumulation of bird droppings results in unsanitary working conditions and can increase the risk of slip hazards. In extreme circumstances, employees and contractors have even refused to work in such conditions until long-term solutions were realized. Furthermore, during their respective nesting seasons, nuisance birds can become aggressive, endangering employees and/or contractors.

Bird Solutions for Energy Properties

Energy properties can manage their nuisance bird issues by leveraging bird management solutions, including nest and egg management, automated lasers, and structural deterrents. The most appropriate solution will be property-specific and should be based upon the specific bird species involved and the behaviors the birds exhibit.
